ABRSM SCHOLARSHIP

In 2020, ALEGRO was selected as one of 8 projects globally to be a beneficiary of the International Sponsorship Fund of the ABRSM. We are extremely honoured to be the first ever Brazilian organization to be awarded this prize. The funding will be used in partnership with the ABRSM and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester to offer a residencial study scholarship to a leading young Brazilian Musician who will be selected from the members of the ALEGRO Youth Orchestra.

About ABRSM

ABRSM was founded in 1889 when Sir Alexander MacKenzie, principal of the Royal Academy of Music, suggested to Sir George Grove, director of the Royal College of Music and founder of “Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians” that their two institutions unite to create an examining body…

inspired by disinterested motives for the benefit of musical education… which would genuinely provide a stimulus and an objective for a high standard of achievement”.

The first “Board” included Arthur Sullivan and the composers John Stainer, Charles Stanford and Hubert Parry. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward the VII) was president of the association and annual meetings of the examining body were held at Marlborough House.

Today, 131 years later and with the Patronage of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II

ABRSM is the UK’s largest music education body, one of its largest music publishers and the world’s leading provider of music exams, holding over 650,000 assessments in more than 90 countries every year.

The following words, from the ABRSM mission statement, also express perfectly what drives the ALEGRO Mission.

…to nurture a love for music, and to inspire achievement in it. At ABRSM, we believe that everyone, wherever they’re from, should have access to high-quality music-learning”

At ALEGRO we are both thrilled and humbled to have been selected by such an illustrious institution as a recipient of financial support.
